A look inside: Computing the hadronic corrections to the muon g-2 in lattice QCD

Abstract:
More than eighty years after the muon was discovered it is still a source of mystery. The muon's magnetic moment is particularly interesting because of a longstanding tension between experiment and theoretical expectations. This quantity is now known with an exquisite precision of 190 parts per billion, thanks to the g-2 experiment at Fermilab, which is expected to reach its precision goal of 140 part per billion next year. The theoretical calculations of the muon’s magnetic moment must account for the virtual effects of all particles and forces within the Standard Model. Here the effects due to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are by far the largest sources of theory uncertainty and must be better quantified in order to maximize the discovery potential of the experimental program. Lattice field theory offers an ab initio path towards theoretical calculations of these effect. In this lecture I provide an introduction to lattice field theory and describe the ongoing program to compute these corrections with the required precision.
